And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.
Daniel 10:10-14 KJV
Daniel last vision, recorded in chapter 10-12, caused distress for the prophet. He mourned for weeks observing a limited fast during which he refrained from eating ” choice food” including meat and wine (10:2). He did so waiting on God to clarify his vision on the great war to come. When the angel did appear 3 weeks later, the angel had eyes like flaming torches a face like lighting and a voice like multitudes, which made Daniel fall to the ground in a deep sleep (10:9).
The frightening vision and appearance of the angel, perhaps along with fasting, had left the prophet in a weaken state. The Angel assured Daniel of God’s favor and loves saying ” Daniel, you are highly esteemed”. The Angel explains that God had answered him right away, however, for 21 days he was delayed by demonic power, whom the angel described as ” Prince of the Persian kingdom”, detained God’s messenger for 3 weeks. The delay gives us a picture of the unseen spiritual forces at war around us every day. In Ephesians 6:12, Paul says, ” For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Daniel’s angelic visitor needed help to get past this powerful demonic power and bring the Lord’s answer to the prophet. Michael, described in Daniel 12:1 as ” the great prince who protects your people,” came to him and help him break free so he could deliver his message to Daniel. Satan’s fierce resistance showed the importance of what GOD was about to reveal to the aged prophet.
Finally reaching Daniel, the angel explain the vision to him. As Daniel perhaps already suspected, the vision to the future of Daniel’s people, the Israelites. The great conflict pictured in his vision would be fulfilled in the distant future.
